Belarusia So this will be the best entomological expedition, because we finaly decided to go all three together. We three Jiri Skala, Jiri Darebnik and me we are the best friends but we always have difficulties to decide where we want to go because every one of us is interested in different butterflies. But this time Belarusia seemed to be Ok for all of us, so we went first two weeks of June in 2005, by train to Minsk where we were about to meet with local entomologist Anatolij Kulak, who I know through the internet and who I told to show us the beauties of Belarusia plus some butterflies of course. That was actualy Sergej who invited me to Belarusia but he seemed to have some difficulties of taking care of us and he rather went to Ukraine! After drinking during whole way in train we finaly arrived to Minsk, and I do not even know how fast the way went, but when we three are together time always runs fast and especially with some bottles of beer and Vodka. In the Minsk train station the Santa Claus or Mr. God wellcomes us warmly, because Anatolij has very thik and big bird so he looks like God from saint picture :-) But the main thing is that he was there for us for few days and then he forwarded us to another big entomologist Kyril, becasue Anatolij was kinda busy with his little son and wife, but nevermind, Kyril was definitely the best man we could meet in Belarusia. He is a big profesional and also a big fan of exactly those butterflies that Jiri Skala loves so they already descussed a trip to Russia for next year. We are all happy because Kyril has showed us very nice places and especially huge bogs as I have never seen before! The first place that we have been to was Glebkovka, very nice pine forest mixed with bushes of blueberries and some bushy meadows where I have found Gynaeophora selenitica female right after mating so she laid me whole mass of eggs so I was happy. Then we went to Talka which was nice bog in the forest with tons of mosquitos and all the butterflies that we wished to catch. We spent there few nice and almost abstinent days and then we went with Anatolij to Talkacovsina which is his home village in the centre of Belarusia. He introduced us to his family and we stayed there for few days. After that we were only with Kyril and we all decided to visit the biggest Belarusian bogs at the north of the country. They were great but unfortunately they were almost all burned up from last year big fire which damaged most of the bogs. On the way back we just stoped in one forest to look for Boloria thore, but instead of B. thore we were looking for Jiri Darebnik who has got lost in that forest. It was not very funny because we were looking for him whole day and he was just gone for whole day and night. The worst thing was that there were bogs all around that forest so he could drawn in the bog easily and there we would never find him ever! We were just hoping that the next day he will simply call us from Minsk or from somewhere. Thanks God this also happened, so when we meet him at Minsk train station where he was waiting all that time I first wanted to kill him but I was happy that he is alive. He just lost him self in that forest and could not find the way back to the car so he finaly found himself in some village where he asked some people for help and they gave him money for bus to go to Minsk where he decided to wait for us at the train station from where we were suppose to go back home next day. He was there sitting at the train station all alone and after few hours Police found him and arrested him because he was foreigner without any documents only with butterfly net in one hand. We had only one day left so we spent it in Minsk looking around the town centre and drinking cheap but good beer in bars. The good thing was that we had time to observe all those beautiful girls in town. I tell you that I have NEVER seen so many beautiful girls anywhere else in the world! Pure Jiri, now I can imagine how he felt sitting all day at the train station, surrounded with all those angels. Martin Jagelka Lokalita: Talka, Glepkovka, Talkacovsina. Date: 1 - 14.6.2005.
